[00:00:00] Welcome to the Wing Life Podcast, where we talk about wing foiling and the lifestyles
[00:00:12] of those who enjoy this great sport.
[00:00:14] Alright, Clemah.
[00:00:16] Thanks for taking the time, man.
[00:00:17] I know you just got back from some pretty epic riding, so I really appreciate you taking
[00:00:22] the time chart with us.
[00:00:24] Yeah, yeah guys. I start So with my parents we move when I was three years old in berries in
[00:01:41] In south Wales of France close to the water and at six years old I start to
[00:02:46] I was like doing like all the kids like six to 14. I was like doing school and surf doing like competition of surfing and I was feeling that I wanted to not
[00:02:53] just only surf and like do longboarding stand-up. So this is the thing that was
[00:02:59] more easy for me to do in Franceontura for the first time and with some people that I know they told me, oh I have a friend in Forte Vontura that I have a kite school, you should go with him, he speak French, at this time I was not speaking English at all. So I was like okay this is gonna be cool to have someone that speak French and I meet Tommy that on the midday for my school and I was trying to go kite. Even if it was just 30 minutes on the water, I was going for 30 minutes. Even if I couldn't eat and after I was like trying to eat on the school, I was doing it, I was crazy, it was cold, rainy, I just go.
[00:07:03] And super lucky that you are stite k arrived. My cat was destroyed. I was like super fining. But I was like, OK, I can't bought any more kites. So I don't know how I going to do for that comp. I went to friend that was doing kites. And I was like, please, can you borrow me like two kites just for the comp? I rough and balls because they brought me balls and kites. Oh, wow.
[00:07:04] I went to that competition.
[00:07:06] Not much win, but manageable Fold and some Chinese Fold. And when I went maybe the year after it first, I was going every year, my friend was already bored like a Go Fold and he was trying to fold with longer balls, just trying to fold. And he put me on the phone, catch some way, first session of folding, I destroyed my leg on the fold.
[00:08:20] Oh yeah.
[00:08:21] But on the balls, the fold went on the side
[00:08:23] and then just hit the right.
[00:08:26] But so I knew a bit how to kite, you maybe wants to know how to win yourself in the wave, but no. I will send you a wing gear and you will do, you're gonna do a wing. I was like, I know, I don't want stuff, win. So they send me a wing. And I start to win. And at the beginning, I was like, that sport, we're gonna break everything. Gonna broke everything on the wave. It's not super sketchy.
[00:09:41] You can't be in the critical section because if you fail, you break everything.
[00:09:45] It can be done loose for ourselves. How was that getting into that for the first time? Yeah, it was crazy because we already saw some footage of Wesley Brito going on that gnarly slab which is fun and I was like completely scared I was like this guy is just not crazy to do this But at least this is the home place so you play with what he has and of true good playground
[00:11:01] but super scary and tundrause and
[00:11:04] We went there for swell that was not but he was not good type of wave, when you go surf a slab like this, it's not just a wave. It's a slab, it's maybe don't look as big as Nazare and those waves, but it's crazy as those waves. You go fast, it's dangerous, no place for mistake.
[00:12:20] We see a couple days ago, like maturing jaws, we didn't see his wave, I don't know if you
[00:12:26] saw, but he didn't put helmet and he show that I still going super deep on the wave. That was the that everything went good. Yeah. But everything could go so super bad.
[00:13:43] And I was feeling super bad to have like crazy pictures that go time using Handmade. Even if it's more after using Handmade, maybe if it's super small, similar and you don't want to have a Handmade up to me and have two people to don't do it, but you know that a helmet, everyone has to wear a helmet. You want us to push on that direction. It's why at the contest, we have to use a helmet and a jacket. Yep. It doesn't make sense. It's like you use a motorbike, you put a helmet and you don't. You're not going to ride without a helmet.
[00:16:21] No, that makes sense. I don't know 70 kilometers on
[00:17:43] like kind of a mountain wave
[00:18:44] and this speed we'll just go and go on the slab. The good thing is you can arrive to the bottom on the flat path and after you need to be
[00:18:51] a surfer to an okay, I don't go too deep, I don't go too under shoulder and I try to
[00:18:56] get that right on the meter.
[00:18:58] But at least it's like extreme condition and yeah, you can go 1 meters and have fun and
[00:19:06] don't go on was young with two meters and I said to the caution I don't want to go it's too big for me like some rocks some stuff I was like I don't feeling good. I don't want to suffer I'm not gonna go in the water. So my name after that that feature that he called me little cojones Like small boys, okay, so I was like, okay, yeah, no problem. It's true. I don't want to go
[00:20:22] and
[00:20:24] I was feeling on myself something different You see, is what I was thinking. And bigger waves, you can look even more beautiful and more impressive because the wave is bigger and you try to draw line. So I bought bigger balls, I went to Guetaree,
[00:21:41] we have a sport in front that is kind of a big,
[00:21:43] no, it's a big wave.
[00:21:44] Not compared to another way, it's smaller,
[00:21:47] but it's a very certain step, we were like, okay, now we are, I think it was 17 and I was 18 and we're like,
[00:23:01] okay, now maybe the next step iskar from the Azare, that I think a lot of people knows that Justin is the girl that's of the biggest wave with the best style, and she do also every sport, like, well, we can talk for long for... Yeah. Is it just like special and she do everything?
[00:24:21] So she asks us, guys, do you want to go?
[00:24:24] And we're like, all right, if they ask us to go,
[00:24:27] we went on the right I had till now like even now I didn't get pounds two time in 10 minutes by two wave maybe they were not the biggest but just the poor those two wave was the most powerful breeze again and be, I don't know, try to breathe and be strong. But feeling, inside me I was feeling good. Just was a hard moment but feeling super good and strong. Hit by those who hit and hit by those waves and Garrett
[00:27:02] McNamara took me on the inside kind of the French. One of the
[00:28:21] pollination guide that just is one of the best. He also hit the best but we have to pull everything we can to be safe. That makes sense and plus your safety team as well they got years of experience out there because they have to be able to come in between sets and get you out. When you get one though and how does that make you feel when you get the ride like you've
[00:29:41] had a you were just in Mavericks not that long ago you had some pretty amazing rides But I want to put it is just like a dream of shutting my ricks I even like Bought that on eBay to have it and I was like, okay This is the thing I want to have in my if one day have a House I want to have this thing somewhere and I serve the wave that was for me a Dream like I it's technically smoothie many times Went to Nazare get contact by HBO the survey that and what food waves
[00:31:06] Starting to talk with Nick Von rub
[00:32:02] So new boards, new stuff, getting head away, feeling super good, partnering.
[00:32:04] The other people was super nice, local was nice,
[00:32:09] and the wave was crazy.
[00:32:11] So, exactly.
[00:32:13] I don't know, you're in that place.
[00:32:15] It's, everyone know that it's like a shaggy place.
[00:32:18] We seaweed, with rocks, cold water, dark water.
[00:32:22] And you are there.
[00:32:23] Then it's the, for every surface, the scariest wave.
[00:33:24] took me there and like no board so not a lot of mill maker and I just take my phone and start into taking videos of everyone there the way we're huge. After
[00:33:29] two hours Nick was there fun rep towing and you're familiar ride with a
[00:33:33] board that I try with him in Nazare is who is bought because my towing boards
[00:33:38] wasn't a board that didn't came and it asked me your family ride with his
[00:33:44] board where was huge I was like sitting for and the wave is just like going to break
[00:35:00] behind me.
[00:35:01] And I just make that jump like maybe get I get too good wave or so, and yeah, the guys was told to see like a new generation that I don't know, I think when
[00:36:22] they look around that you do many sports, and I get get and I can get many wave. But it's honestly, it's all I like it a lot. So for me, it's just pleasure to be in the water. And so at least what I can like or so, this is in my point of view,
[00:37:41] it's having people happy to see me surfing or see me riding, you know,
[00:38:43] and I wish I can take those waves, stand up paddling, falling, wing falling.
[00:38:45] After the fall, part of the fall,
[00:38:48] we get that problem that we need to work on the boards
[00:38:51] and on the fall.
[00:38:54] And at least with my sponsor, we try to work on it,
[00:38:58] but it's super hard because we need to make protos
[00:39:02] and it's a big one that don't want to make too much protos,
[00:39:05] like no one have protos, almost. long time after all those waypounds, I hope it's not gonna happen again but it's something that came up and every wave you fell in for any. Like we went in the shooting in Chopo, we went on the slab, we suffered right, Orivia at the beginning of the wave, our teammate that served in crazy good, fell in the
[00:40:21] beginning by a small mistake and she got just like the fall was down and she more friendly. I have a very good idea of something that if I tend to hide the I'm an un-ruh person sure one guy is gonna do it but I almost want to tell it so that will be a pleasure to see a brand or someone trying to do it. Because I think with Joton
[00:41:41] they never gonna do it. This is the point they want to make everyone happy and doing on the phone and it's way up. So I don't don't go don't fly too much because the problem with our boards is if you go too fast And you just jump on every jump jump on every bell
[00:44:22] It you're gonna you're gonna fit at some point. Okay, but it's working with sports making like
[00:45:25] when you're on the I'm folding like the the way part that I seen from macho when it touched down the boards it fell in front so what we could say is okay if you
[00:45:31] fall if the board's touch you fact if I have hold on my boards that the water
[00:45:37] can go from the bottom to the top with a certain onion that maybe push my board
[00:45:41] down it's only gonna be maybe harder to when I get told by Majeski to get up Butts is heavier on the boards. Yeah. Imagine the boards. Yeah. They are heavy, they are heavy in stuff. And I think we have to check the footage, but they are longer boards. Was narrow and long. And this is something that we can work on. Having a board that is too short,
[00:47:02] it's good because you have less contact with the wearer.
[00:47:05] So less hair is going to push into that area But I'm thankful to be talking to you because there's so many different aspects of this including safety
[00:48:25] Including like having some of our top riders get injured bit more safe. I don't know. But that will be for sure pleasure to get how much you said, like he wants to push falling in big waves. And this is something that it's good. Like Kai didn't did it. But he's not he didn't did it because he don't want to do it. Yeah, we're more skilled, we're more technique can me and if the owner of the formula of the foil, it's gonna sell for it. It's not gonna sell the formula of the foil, it's gonna sell foil for guys that want to start because this is someone that's why we start, why we still doing cars like
[00:51:01] formula, why Mercedes is putting millions on it. And the fault is going to change the word. We are fighting the guys, pump on the lake. They do for everywhere, every sport for both for it. For me, it's completely the future. It's the future to have the fault
[00:52:22] around. It's like surfing. You can only behind the boat. And he was like, that was crazy. That was so fun. I couldn't imagine I was like, yeah, I couldn't imagine neither. Like the boat I see that boats for the last five years going up and down every day. Yeah. And we just serve that thing. And everywhere in the world, they have boats going and you
[00:53:44] can just be smart. You know that the boat is gonna come. Why it's little, like, I don't know the feeling of foil and makes everything amplified, makes everything look bigger. So I can't imagine writing it something on something bigger, but it is definitely the future and there's so many more people coming to it. Like you can have it anywhere. You can have a, like we've talked about this a lot on the show, but just the amount of fun that people can have that maybe they needed to get in their lives,
[00:55:02] right?
[00:55:03] It's pretty cool to have that.
[00:56:02] You can get
[00:56:07] Surni perfect wave for learning no one out
[00:56:16] I don't know the perfect weather everything you want you get 100% going for the surface on they will get all
[00:56:18] happy Some of them super happy
[00:56:21] but never as
[00:56:24] Those hundred people if they go fighting they will get crazy and
[00:57:25] maybe seven years ago, when I was 15, maybe when I was 16,
[00:57:29] we went to the app and training like two times a week.
[00:57:35] And we are not like something, we are not like different than other people.
[00:57:37] We are like completely like everyone
[00:57:39] because someone can hold his breath for everyone
[00:57:44] can hold his breath. So you have like many different styles of and training. Some training is a cardio and apnea. Some training will be apnea with a long stop between all the apnea but longer distance. So you
[00:59:01] have like many many different training. Like for me go that far. It's like this kind of specific training that you're gonna just do one or maybe two for a long training. And after if I can give some advice, never train up near alone,
[01:00:22] even if you think it's a short up near our stuff,
[01:00:25] every time you need to train with one
[01:00:26] that is like looking for you. in and out, breathe in and out, breathe in, you stop and you try to hold on two minutes. It's like... There's a lot there. Yeah. Yeah. Everything you think it's hard, you just try to do and it's just about in the head and how you can hold your breath after... Yeah.
[01:01:40] If you look at the Afniya guys that do Afniya, they are like crazy good.
[01:01:45] Okay.
[01:01:46] But it's a few years. And I went 22 meters in Tai Chi but just like once to try with friend and try to go But I was not feeling good at all and with him we start to talk about it and make training like going to 10 meters wait First day in possible. I don't know 10 meters. I could stay one minute maximum. I was like
[01:03:01] I don't know I was there wanted to go I wanted to go
[01:03:04] The day after I don't know something changed in my skydive, but I feel it's something you are under like 32 meters. You can't look up because it's not you're going to... You can't look up. It's just you need to stay kind of... In your bubble kind of thing?
[01:04:20] Head down.
[01:04:21] What?
[01:04:22] I said you have to stay kind of in your bubble?
[01:04:25] Or if you look up, is it just too insane? A player is a long training, but everyone can be good and I did many classrooms with Jodon and Ion with it with a professional appener trainer. And she taught us that for a lot of sports, even if it's not in the water, it's insane.
[01:05:40] You know that your body can hold down your breast for two minutes.
[01:05:44] And you know that you're a helper to do it. is the trip we're going to make. After that, go back to Nazarena and I will take all my equipment there for Kite and train there because after we're going to have the first step of the season of Kite and wing in Jabo Valley, and Portugal is good for Wave and for Wind. They have a lot of direction of wind that can be good.
[01:07:00] So I will go there and train for it and to be ready for the
[01:07:04] season. people that want to learn a bit more. Thanks a lot. Thanks for listening us. And I hope you learned some stuff. If someone wants to make a board with all of these, let me know if it's working out. And I don't know if people want to go on the sofa
[01:08:21] and try to roll the breast for two minutes.
[01:08:22] Let me know.
[01:08:24] But yeah.
[01:08:25] Yeah, that'll sound good.
[01:08:26] That's good.
[01:08:27] That's good.
[01:08:27] Yeah.
[01:08:28] Oh, yeah.
[01:08:28] Perfect.
