[00:00:00] [SPEAKER_00]: Hey everyone, welcome back to the show. This week we have Alessandro José Tomasi joining us. He is a pro-winged

[00:00:07] [SPEAKER_00]: fall racer from Italy. He joins us talk about his early IQ foiling days, his loving passion

[00:00:14] [SPEAKER_00]: for teaching on Lake Garda, his sponsors, his hair care routine and much more. We do hope that

[00:00:22] [SPEAKER_00]: you enjoy this episode. If you haven't caught last week's episode, it was with Josh Meyer.

[00:00:27] [SPEAKER_00]: Josh is a German national under 19 win fall freestyle champion. We talked about Josh's entry into

[00:00:34] [SPEAKER_00]: water sports, his favorite tricks. We even touched on sponsorships with elevate and a 3D

[00:00:40] [SPEAKER_00]: and the gear he uses. So I hope you enjoy that episode as well. Now I want to take this opportunity

[00:00:46] [SPEAKER_00]: to thank our team for making this show a reality. We have franked that helps us with media and consulting.

[00:00:52] [SPEAKER_00]: We have metias on guest relations. We have Stefan on audio mastering. A big thank you as a lot of

[00:00:58] [SPEAKER_00]: work goes into each and every episode. Next I'd like to say thank you to North foils. They are

[00:01:04] [SPEAKER_00]: first official sponsor, they have a great team, great gear and they are just as passionate as we are.

[00:01:10] [SPEAKER_00]: We are stoked to be working with you guys and I'm looking forward to riding your SF series.

[00:01:16] [SPEAKER_00]: This winter in Laventana, lastly, winter is coming and if you haven't decided where to go yet,

[00:01:21] [SPEAKER_00]: I was just hopping over to our website, winglifepodcast.com and clicking on trips in the main

[00:01:26] [SPEAKER_00]: navigation menu to see what we have in store for 2025. We have two amazing trips that I think you would love.

[00:01:33] [SPEAKER_00]: We are finalizing our trip with Paul and Nevadaina. Details to come soon. So make sure to check out

[00:01:39] [SPEAKER_00]: winglifepodcast.com. Now I hope you enjoy the show.

[00:01:51] [SPEAKER_01]: Welcome to the winglifepodcast where we talk about wing foiling and the lifestyles of those who

[00:01:57] [SPEAKER_01]: enjoy this great sport. Alright Jose, thanks for joining me man. Thank you for inviting me.

[00:02:04] [SPEAKER_01]: So the world of racing, my buddy and Vancouver Alan just loves to rip around an entrance

[00:02:09] [SPEAKER_01]: circle. But how did you get started in the world of racing and wing foiling?

[00:02:17] [SPEAKER_03]: I come from IQ for so yeah I was winter foiling. I used the whole Olympic.

[00:02:24] [SPEAKER_03]: So I did that kind of an R6 IQ for and at one point I was like okay let's try a winging but just

[00:02:35] [SPEAKER_03]: it was on in June 2021 and I started winning. Having really much fun. I was going out every day

[00:02:44] [SPEAKER_03]: and I was still in school and there was the world championship in October

[00:02:51] [SPEAKER_03]: here in a computer that it's like 20 minutes from my home. And at the same time there was the

[00:02:59] [SPEAKER_03]: European of IQ foiling I believe Marseille. Yeah and so at that point I was in school. I didn't want

[00:03:11] [SPEAKER_03]: to leave school for a long going to Marseille so I just take here but to join the wing foiled

[00:03:19] [SPEAKER_03]: worlds and there was like the very first championship they made and yeah I won it so I got

[00:03:30] [SPEAKER_03]: into winging really fast. I was really happy about it and I was at an easy transition from

[00:03:38] [SPEAKER_03]: work. Actually yeah pretty easy because just just for learning because actually the wing

[00:03:47] [SPEAKER_03]: is really close to a winter sail. There are some differences but if you're already with

[00:03:52] [SPEAKER_03]: wind serfer than it's easy to get on the wing and already I was really wind foiling so also the

[00:03:58] [SPEAKER_03]: was not a problem for me and so yeah the first time I went into the water with the wing I did

[00:04:05] [SPEAKER_03]: like the second try I was already foiling for 500 meters so. Nice did you think it would grow up

[00:04:13] [SPEAKER_01]: or blow up to be this fast especially would you WA and all the tricks and stuff that they're throwing

[00:04:18] [SPEAKER_01]: down and the speeds that you guys are hitting racing? No actually I didn't think at the beginning

[00:04:26] [SPEAKER_03]: I wasn't so convinced about trying winging. I started in 2021 it's not that early

[00:04:35] [SPEAKER_03]: and because I already saw it on guard a leg but it didn't convince me at all but at one point I just did

[00:04:46] [SPEAKER_01]: it and it started exploding so much. And you said you were just over just before you came on

[00:04:56] [SPEAKER_01]: but you guys were recording to see what the record was for fastest racing and so yeah a couple

[00:05:03] [SPEAKER_03]: weeks ago I was in France for this were record attempt that was organized but about from

[00:05:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Princess Peter and yeah so we're just waiting for the confirmation that we maybe take

[00:05:23] [SPEAKER_03]: long but apparently now I will be the World Record let me say holder yeah the World Record holder

[00:05:39] [SPEAKER_03]: the World Record holder oh shit how fast how fast did you get? That was a on 500 meters I did

[00:05:52] [SPEAKER_03]: 33.55 knots and an another is the noticle mine which is it's the average speed on the

[00:06:04] [SPEAKER_03]: distance you know the World Record holder always like this and on an article mine I did the

[00:06:11] [SPEAKER_01]: 30 knots point three so 37 I'm gonna see what that is in kilometers. T1 kilometers an hour

[00:06:20] [SPEAKER_03]: it's getting pretty fast yeah yeah it is we're almost going faster I'm often training with

[00:06:27] [SPEAKER_03]: the wind serfoyes the like the BWA guys and I'm not I'm not slower than them so I'm really close

[00:06:37] [SPEAKER_01]: really really yeah what's adding to the speed foil choice body positioning wings like what goes into

[00:06:47] [SPEAKER_03]: given you all that speed a lot of hours in the water because to to control the foil at that speed

[00:06:55] [SPEAKER_03]: it's not really easy and we use pretty small foil we're using not as small as wind serf

[00:07:03] [SPEAKER_03]: do because we are about 500 square centimeters right now and so yeah I expect to next year we go

[00:07:11] [SPEAKER_03]: really much smaller with the foil and we will go faster for sure and yeah body positioning also

[00:07:20] [SPEAKER_01]: up okay so now did you like to hit those kind of speeds obviously when did you start wind surfing

[00:07:27] [SPEAKER_03]: and wind serfoyes like you started pretty young age? wind surfing yes I started my that don't

[00:07:33] [SPEAKER_03]: saw wind serfins cool here on guard so oh cool you're really happy when I was young so I really started

[00:07:44] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't know when I was already maybe able to stand up I was already like playing on boards

[00:07:51] [SPEAKER_03]: and everything and I also have an older sister which is two years older than me and

[00:07:58] [SPEAKER_03]: always happened that when she was starting to learn wind surfing I was jealous of her so I really

[00:08:05] [SPEAKER_01]: I always wanted to try as well so was it a natural progression then to get into competition?

[00:08:11] [SPEAKER_03]: yeah yeah I started competing in wind serfoy at nine years old on techno 23 but in Italy and

[00:08:22] [SPEAKER_03]: yeah it's I was just always in the water and at one point a friend of my dad told

[00:08:31] [SPEAKER_03]: to him to make me race and so we decided to join his race in sardine and that was the first

[00:08:38] [SPEAKER_03]: Italian championship I made and yeah I wanted and but really tight racing so

[00:08:49] [SPEAKER_03]: I have a really nice remember of that event even if it's what views are going already

[00:08:56] [SPEAKER_01]: that's pretty cool um did you have any fear with real like because that's 60 kilometers on a

[00:09:07] [SPEAKER_01]: damn like you do riding F1 like how does that kind of whole process go?

[00:09:13] [SPEAKER_03]: I take some bit of a warm up. You have to start getting used to it and can also happen

[00:09:22] [SPEAKER_03]: that you fall but actually in winging the when you fall it's not that dangerous us maybe on wind surf

[00:09:31] [SPEAKER_03]: because you maybe just crash the board leaves your feet and you just maybe glide a little bit

[00:09:40] [SPEAKER_03]: with the wing far away and yeah it's pretty breech so I'm not not that scared to fall actually

[00:09:48] [SPEAKER_01]: okay now your foot straps so when your feet just come out of the straps and you fall?

[00:09:53] [SPEAKER_03]: yeah it also happened when I was in France doing the in the record the day before I did it

[00:10:01] [SPEAKER_03]: was light wind and I was just testing the equipment and everything I was riding

[00:10:11] [SPEAKER_03]: and we didn't expect to have a sandbank where I was riding but there was one and it was a little bit

[00:10:19] [SPEAKER_03]: cloudy when it's sunny you easily see it because you see when where is deep it's blue water and

[00:10:26] [SPEAKER_03]: where it's shallow it's a pretty like sand color but when when there's a cloud passing and

[00:10:33] [SPEAKER_03]: you're in the shadow you don't notice the difference so I just went into a sandbank and I

[00:10:40] [SPEAKER_03]: broke off oil but it's been a pretty easy crash because just my feet slipped out of the

[00:10:48] [SPEAKER_03]: foot straps and I flew away with the wing a little bit gliding and then I came back there was

[00:10:53] [SPEAKER_03]: the board stuck in the sand I got the board in my hands I flipped it and there was no glider anymore

[00:11:03] [SPEAKER_01]: all right have there been any other crazy crashes during your races yeah yeah for sure

[00:11:11] [SPEAKER_03]: like at the beginning of the season the first race was in low cut the GWA and in the last day I

[00:11:20] [SPEAKER_03]: was doing pretty good I was really fast and but in one in one race of the finals I had a bad start

[00:11:31] [SPEAKER_03]: and I was coming from below the feet it was a reaching start and the first mark was in a

[00:11:40] [SPEAKER_03]: and I was coming from Darwin and there was Bastien as Kuvet that didn't see me I was pretty much in

[00:11:47] [SPEAKER_03]: a insight he thought he was free and he just made a pretty tight turn on the buoy but

[00:11:55] [SPEAKER_03]: I was in between him and the buoy and we did a pretty pretty tough crash yeah actually

[00:12:04] [SPEAKER_03]: we fell in the water we didn't know what happened we looked at the boards and the boards were like

[00:12:09] [SPEAKER_03]: crossed together with the foys I don't know yeah I made some damage on my foot and on his as

[00:12:18] [SPEAKER_01]: well in that crash but you guys didn't get hurt no actually not luckily not so how does it feel

[00:12:24] [SPEAKER_01]: flying over the water at 60 kilometers an hour is it like you're right it's pretty much right in

[00:12:30] [SPEAKER_03]: same speed as a car it gives me a lot of adrenaline I love it yeah I love to do a speedruns

[00:12:35] [SPEAKER_01]: now do you have to do any micro obviously you're always doing micro adjustments because how

[00:12:42] [SPEAKER_03]: long as you're masked my knees one meter nine it's really long but we also bend the board a lot

[00:12:50] [SPEAKER_03]: we right almost yeah we almost tried sometimes even more than 45 degrees I believe

[00:12:58] [SPEAKER_03]: and yeah especially there in those really win the spot you're riding with the three meters that

[00:13:06] [SPEAKER_03]: it's really mostly so not that stable with really gusty wind as one point it pulls you

[00:13:15] [SPEAKER_03]: and then it doesn't pull anymore it makes everything really hard and you have to keep adjusting the

[00:13:21] [SPEAKER_01]: board so how much wind are you guys riding and then if it's if it's three is a pushing 30

[00:13:28] [SPEAKER_01]: 4045 not 45 or the shit stuff happens fast then wow so this whole journey I guess started

[00:13:41] [SPEAKER_03]: was it your dad that taught you all of this stuff yeah it all started from my dad

[00:13:47] [SPEAKER_01]: with me in serving do you still um winter foil race are you more just uh swinging now now that you're

[00:13:54] [SPEAKER_03]: actually I'm just swinging I have I'm pretty happy of my career in wing this year is going pretty

[00:14:01] [SPEAKER_03]: well and I miss wind surfing I miss wind surf racing wind surf falling wind surf with the fin

[00:14:11] [SPEAKER_03]: but yeah I believe I have to focus on wing and I love wing as well so it's not that bad okay so I was

[00:14:24] [SPEAKER_01]: and then your European world cup ranking is also pretty good so so far great start to the year

[00:14:30] [SPEAKER_01]: so you're teaching where sorry are you teaching where you're living or you teaching uh yeah

[00:14:35] [SPEAKER_01]: anybody got that I'm not like how is that like I've seen so many beautiful videos and stuff from there

[00:14:42] [SPEAKER_03]: yeah it's super nice super nice like like so so beautiful mountains and I can just look out

[00:14:52] [SPEAKER_03]: my window and I see the mountains and yeah it's really windows well every day you can ride with a

[00:15:01] [SPEAKER_02]: wing foil I would say almost every day of the year really is it thermal or is it just like what makes

[00:15:08] [SPEAKER_03]: the wing go yeah thermal and also the mountains make a bit of our channel nice so you teach

[00:15:16] [SPEAKER_01]: wind surfing there and everything else I did between surfing and wing foil I don't guide

[00:15:22] [SPEAKER_01]: for racing is there something that you do hit the gym more is there different training techniques

[00:15:29] [SPEAKER_01]: that you would bring in to racing compared to freestyle or I go three times a week I say they're like

[00:15:36] [SPEAKER_03]: two hours every time and I'm not doing much cardio but I would have to I would have to integrate

[00:15:44] [SPEAKER_03]: because like pumping in racing gets really exhausting are you guys find that the like the

[00:15:51] [SPEAKER_01]: free-fly slalom it's both a so it's racing you're fully lit and then you got a pump sections and climb

[00:15:57] [SPEAKER_01]: and how do you find that aspect of things this is not just pure race right yeah it's not just pure

[00:16:03] [SPEAKER_03]: race but yeah there's some free-fly stuff in there yes I've been different it's fun as well

[00:16:08] [SPEAKER_03]: and sometimes even more technical when you have like a lot of waves how do you like traveling around

[00:16:15] [SPEAKER_01]: all those different spots because there's so many beautiful places around the world that you

[00:16:18] [SPEAKER_03]: guys get to go too yeah yeah it's I like it a lot I've been in in Turkey and then

[00:16:30] [SPEAKER_03]: Switzerland the plan is a beautiful place yeah for sure we visit a lot of beautiful places we are

[00:16:38] [SPEAKER_03]: I really believe we are lucky and I like to be racing yeah racing seems fun what's your favorite

[00:16:48] [SPEAKER_01]: spot and maybe coolest adventure that you've been on while traveling it's been really interesting

[00:16:54] [SPEAKER_03]: going last year in Abu Dhabi where it was this event like really cultural with the with these

[00:17:06] [SPEAKER_03]: Arab people that have a really different culture than then what we have in Europe also in America

[00:17:14] [SPEAKER_03]: so it's been a really nice experience to stay there and what they thought about their culture

[00:17:23] [SPEAKER_01]: that would have been pretty cool so who are your sponsors for racing then like what equipment are

[00:17:28] [SPEAKER_01]: you currently riding I'm riding on an already and then Japanese other sponsors as well I have

[00:17:34] [SPEAKER_03]: sponsored that it's out of the it's not equipment and then I have the GPS which is Vakaros

[00:17:44] [SPEAKER_03]: it's not as GPS to also a computer that does me the angles of the board and

[00:17:51] [SPEAKER_03]: all the details that I can have a look to when I when I get back home from my computer

[00:17:57] [SPEAKER_01]: now to hit speeds of 60 like is your you were saying your boards are up to 45 degrees is that just

[00:18:04] [SPEAKER_01]: because you're trying to generate more power like why would you be on such a heavy angle it depends

[00:18:10] [SPEAKER_03]: actually on the angle you're doing to the wind because if you're halfway it's really likely to go

[00:18:17] [SPEAKER_03]: that much angled but if you go really deep down when maybe you you ride a little bit more

[00:18:25] [SPEAKER_03]: less angled with the board because you have less power in the wing and when you have a lot of

[00:18:31] [SPEAKER_03]: power in the wing then you have to contrast it with the with the board with the foil and you do that by

[00:18:38] [SPEAKER_01]: by angleing hitting no speeds what are you allocating it to wing development foil development

[00:18:45] [SPEAKER_03]: of course both like foil and wings make a big make the most of of this speed

[00:18:55] [SPEAKER_03]: and but also the board makes a difference actually I've been trying and and you have to set it up

[00:19:03] [SPEAKER_03]: properly like you can change the rake angle but there's

[00:19:10] [SPEAKER_03]: angles that work with certain shape but not with another shape yeah it's pretty complicated

[00:19:17] [SPEAKER_01]: to prepare for a competition everybody does it differently what's your favorite way to prepare for

[00:19:23] [SPEAKER_03]: a competition I it's really important to to figure out what's the bad segment you can use

[00:19:31] [SPEAKER_03]: so because of course you cannot bring all your home with you when you go to races so you have to

[00:19:40] [SPEAKER_03]: to decide and test a lot to prepare for competitions and yeah to perform the best when you're

[00:19:48] [SPEAKER_01]: there do you get anxious excited worried before a race starts what's your pre-race routine

[00:19:55] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't do much actually I'm really lucky because I'm not that anxious sometimes I get a little bit

[00:20:02] [SPEAKER_03]: anxious and I feel like my heart rate starts getting a bit too high before the start but when I

[00:20:11] [SPEAKER_03]: just concentrate just think about what I have to do and what I don't have to do and not think

[00:20:19] [SPEAKER_03]: too much about what can happen bad or what happens if I don't do anything if I don't do something good

[00:20:30] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm really relaxed and things works and then let's talk about this beautiful hair of yours

[00:20:37] [SPEAKER_02]: the girls must love it my mom cuts it that's awesome a lot of maintenance are not really

[00:20:51] [SPEAKER_03]: and really just just make it dry just shower make it dry with a towel around my head

[00:20:57] [SPEAKER_03]: and then I just get it off and yeah it's free fine sometimes put some coconut oil on it

[00:21:04] [SPEAKER_03]: just after the shower and then I put the before putting my shower my towel on

[00:21:09] [SPEAKER_03]: and then when I shower it's just shampoo and sometimes balm as well that's it

[00:21:17] [SPEAKER_01]: that's it you're secret speed agents I guess nice so you got a pretty you got a pretty

[00:21:25] [SPEAKER_01]: fine year coming coming ahead of you you're still in school like you're still doing

[00:21:30] [SPEAKER_03]: school while you're racing no I'm not signing I'm not starting

[00:21:42] [SPEAKER_03]: been into like physics maths so for me like starting something like engineer some kind of

[00:21:53] [SPEAKER_03]: engineer to maybe one day start designing wings, folds boards would be awesome

[00:22:04] [SPEAKER_03]: so I would love to but it's complicated with the wind surfing school with the sport career

[00:22:14] [SPEAKER_03]: yeah I hope on day I will make it obviously because you love math

[00:22:20] [SPEAKER_01]: going into that would be something that you would really like then yeah I really like already I really

[00:22:25] [SPEAKER_03]: like to to get on development I really like to get involved when they make new prototypes

[00:22:37] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm always really curious of the of knowing why of the this season they make

[00:22:44] [SPEAKER_03]: I would love one day to be designing probably after the after the sports career

[00:22:51] [SPEAKER_01]: what do you think just with the gear that you're riding or any other gear that you've seen

[00:22:56] [SPEAKER_01]: what do you think the next evolution will be to help you guys hit faster speeds probably I

[00:23:02] [SPEAKER_03]: would say a smaller fall will make the we make a big difference because it's just less drag and

[00:23:13] [SPEAKER_03]: and you can ride faster it's interesting also the double skin wings but in top speed they're

[00:23:22] [SPEAKER_03]: really don't make such a big difference so I think I would go with the smaller fourth smaller

[00:23:30] [SPEAKER_01]: falls instead and and does the tail and obviously there's so many different things that go into it right

[00:23:37] [SPEAKER_01]: like do you want your tail to be just as loose as possible so it gets the last drag but then

[00:23:43] [SPEAKER_01]: it's a little bit harder to control like what's your favorite way of setting up your kit

[00:23:47] [SPEAKER_03]: it's very hard to say because when maybe when you don't have such an easy foil

[00:23:55] [SPEAKER_03]: you can ride but that has less drag you can ride really fast in in lightwinds because you

[00:24:01] [SPEAKER_03]: are pretty much in control so you have more efficiency but sometimes in those really strong

[00:24:07] [SPEAKER_03]: conditions like 45 knots when you ride with the 3 meters wing they having a really controllable

[00:24:18] [SPEAKER_03]: foil makes make a lot because if you if you can control your foil then you can push with the wing

[00:24:24] [SPEAKER_01]: and you just can't ride fast so it's a little bit more stability is better is there anywhere in

[00:24:31] [SPEAKER_01]: the world that you're really looking forward to going to visit I don't have to think about it but

[00:24:36] [SPEAKER_03]: for sure China will be really interesting because it's completely different culture completely different

[00:24:47] [SPEAKER_03]: place that compared to the places I've been before so I'm really curious and I will

[00:24:56] [SPEAKER_01]: be really fun well I hope that trip goes well how long or flight is that?

[00:25:01] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't have the flight yet but I had a look yesterday and it looks like about 20 hours

[00:25:09] [SPEAKER_03]: between 50 and 20 hours in total wow okay mine I'm a long way

[00:25:16] [SPEAKER_03]: yeah but also when we go to Brazil it's pretty long so we'll be fine

[00:25:21] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah let's true what's your favorite stuff that you've had like Brazil has so many different

[00:25:27] [SPEAKER_01]: riding conditions when you're not racing do you practice freestyle or do anything else in the

[00:25:32] [SPEAKER_03]: wing? I'm not I'm not doing any freestyle because when I started winning 2021 in that summer

[00:25:40] [SPEAKER_03]: I was doing a lot of freestyle but just like one month after I learned winging so I wasn't really

[00:25:50] [SPEAKER_03]: good and I got my shoulder out and that's a problem because it's that makes it easy

[00:26:01] [SPEAKER_03]: always easier to get out and in the shoulder so it's verify just just race or

[00:26:13] [SPEAKER_03]: or I have to do an operation on it so I just chill race but I like a lot to ride waves sometimes

[00:26:24] [SPEAKER_03]: just the top of the lake or when I go to Brazil and I have the chance to ride some proper ways

[00:26:31] [SPEAKER_01]: I really have fun so the conditions and like Garda how fun is it to coach do you like teaching other

[00:26:38] [SPEAKER_03]: people to learn the sport that you love so much? I'm really lucky to be teaching instead of being

[00:26:45] [SPEAKER_03]: doing anything else. Teaching and competing. I'm super happy with it. Oh that's cool.

[00:27:12] [SPEAKER_03]: getting in a traveling. Well just try not to make the bags too loose like the stuff you

[00:27:19] [SPEAKER_03]: back in the bag doesn't have to move in the bag and then when you have to when you have something

[00:27:26] [SPEAKER_03]: like really fragile better if you put a lot of a lot of backing or any. So far I've traveled

[00:27:33] [SPEAKER_01]: once with my wing foil kit and I brought my wind surf kit as well and it was like a hundred pounds

[00:27:38] [SPEAKER_01]: it was hard to get through the airport but it was okay. I went to Mexico I went to Laventana
